Traffic analysis
A good way to see how well your website is performing is to monitor the traffic visiting your site. This can not only tell you how many people are viewing, but other factors such as how they find you (directly, via search engines, or other sites), and how many pages they read before leaving. From this you can learn which sections need re-writing, or think of ways to entice more people to visit your site.If your hosting company provides you with website traffic logs, we will download them over a period of a month, and then analyse the results, writing them up into a report for you. If there are any specific questions that you would like answered - relating to particular visitors, or certain pages, for example - we can do this and include the information in your report. This is particularly useful if you need to make a business case for improvements to your website, for example.
Where your hosting company does not provide the logs, we can still analyse your website traffic by adding code to your site which will be picked up by two external companies: Google Analytics and StatCounter. These will capture statistics and provide information, but in a fairly general way; we are less able to ask "questions" of the traffic patterns as we only receive the results, not the raw data. Nonetheless, this will still provide useful information which we will use to create a report for you.
It can be useful to analyse your website traffic at regular intervals (to see whether visitor numbers are growing, or to find out which areas of your site are most and least effective), and is also worth doing at specific times - to judge the success of marketing campaigns, for example.
